Where We Eat on the Island of Mt. Desert: Restaurant Info--Although we camp out almost all the time, we also eat out at least once a week. For restaurants, check out the free Dining Guide which will give you many menus--pick one up at the Shop & Save in Bar Harbor. I think you will find that you will drive to Bar Harbor a lot for dinner (it is a pleasant drive to Bar Harbor if you are staying on the "quiet side"). A good shortcut is to take Route 233 (Eagle Lake Road) near Somesville instead of staying on Route 3. $ -inexpensive...we're talking the Subway or Epi on Cottage St. here. (There is no Burger King, McDonald's or Wendy's on the island.) $$... $7– $14 $$$–dinner $14– $20 without wine or alcoholic drinks $$$$– more than I would want to spend
Bass
Harbor Seafood Ketch
in Bass Harbor - Very good for breakfast and
dinner. $$-$$$ Mainely
Delights - very good dinners, mostly seafood. The
blueberry Oh, Boy Dough Boy may be the best Dessert
on Mt. Desert! $$ Miscellaneous Restauraants Somesville at the One Stop Gas Station has a Subway. $ Burning Tree - Vegetarian and seafood fare on Route 3 in Otter Creek. Need to make reservations in summer (because of this we have not yet tried it, but have heard very nice things about it). You will want to make reservations, because this place is always crowded. $$$ Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound - Before you cross the bridge to the island Mostly lobster, but steamers, fish chowder, etc. available... (one of the two BEST lobster dinners, in my humble opinion) Nothing fancy here--you'll eat off paper plates. Eat inside or on picnic tables. $$$ Jordan Pond House - At least once during your stay, go for afternoon tea and popovers (a 'must' on the Park Loop Road). This is a true Acadia tradition. Also open for lunch $$ and dinner $$$. There dinners are excellent... but it you go about 4 the meals are not as big and not as expensive $$-$$$ The Chart Room-the grilled scallops can't be beat. Route 3 in Hulls Cove. Their clam chowder is very good. They also have early bird specials. $$-$$$ Town Hill Market - They will make a delicious sandwich for you while you wait. Cookies are tasty, and if you can't wait for dessert, stop at the ice cream window outside and ring the bell. $-$$ |

Revised June 2008 Southwest Harbor Little Notch Bakery - Don't miss this one. They serve, in our opinion, the best pizza on the island, made from a sourdough recipe. And all kinds of sandwiches and scrumptious salads. Home baked desserts aren't bad, either. In the middle of town on Main Steet, near the library. Very, very, very good! $ Top of the Hill, Route 102 in Southwest Harbor. Our favorite restaurant! Very good fare at a reasonable price. Don't miss the early bird specials from 4:30 to 6 PM. The baked stuffed haddock is scrumptious. Refills on pink lemonade. $-$$ Beal's - Out on the SWH pier. Good lobster. You can bring your own salad and drinks and sit at the picnic tables. $$ Eat-a-Pita - Tasty pitas and delicious vegetarian delights, right on Main Street. Park around back. $-$$ Northeast Harbor Colonel's Bakery--Very good for fresh made sandwiches to take on a picnic or Pizza. $ 151 Main Street - Open for dinner. Everything we have had is great. $$ Full Belli Deli - Bagels and baked treats. Great start to the morning. $ Pine Tree Market - Sandwiches to go. Also, it is a good place to buy fresh meats and seafood. Specialty cookies are baked in-house, and you can get Little Notch products. $-$$ Bar
Harbor Bar Harbor
Inn - Outside under umbrellas, is nice for lunch.
Lunch $$, Dinner $$$. Inside is much more
expensive, and we have not tried this. Real Pizza which is a theater where you can also eat excellent pizza and salads. It is a theater experience like none other. The seats are very comfortable and take all forms from recliners to sofas to theather seats. Make your order when you arrive and your number will come up on a Bingo screen when it is ready. Bring it back to you seat and enjoy during the movie.$$ Poor Boys- on Route #3 in town- go early and have reservations, good seafood. $$ Havana– excellent with a Cuban flavor. But it is pricy $$$ Epi's - On Cottage Street. Good, inexpensive food to take up Cadillac Mountain for a sunset picnic. Subs, sandwiches, salads and pasta prepared while you wait, cafeteria-style. Eat in or take out fast and easy! $ Miguel's - Near the fire station. Mexican food, fresh and delicious. They bring out taco chips and salsa before you order. $$ The Dairy Bar - As you go out of town south on Route 3. Tasty fish chowder and hamburgers. $$ Gaylin's - Is usually good, and we eat there on Thanksgiving. $$$ Geddy;s - They have lobster pizza and great hamburgers. How 'bout that Bar Harbor pizza with the shrimp and scallops? Gaylin's and Geddy's are next door neighbors on lower Main Street. $$-$$$ 2 Cats- A breakfast 'must on Cottage St next to 124 Cottage Street The blueberry pancakes are great as is their breakfast barrito. The coffee is exceptional. $$ Special Food Event! Fourth of July....if you are near Bar Harbor on Independence Day, don't miss the Rotary Pancake Breakfast at the town ball field. $ George's - We haven't eaten there yet, but it is famous (about $40-60 per person). $$$$$$$$
